The land of pharaohs and pyramids certainly doesn’t need an introduction.
We’re pretty sure it’s everyone’s dream to “kiss” the Sphinx, ride a camel at the Great Pyramids, and marvel at the remains at the Valley of the Kings.
Unfortunately, Egyptian tourism is taking a bit of a hit lately, thanks to some recent negative attention in the media.
But is Egypt good to visit. right now? Yes!
We can confidently say that you shouldn’t remove Egypt from your travel list. In fact, we’d argue that now is the perfect time to visit.
Here’s why.
1. Egypt is Full of Fascinating History
We may not remember a whole lot from history class, but ancient Egypt is hard to forget. Preserved mummies, masks of ancient kings, and hieroglyphics are just a few highlights that make up the fabric of ancient Egyptian history.
You can visit more temples than you can count, mentally transporting myself back to the days where pharaohs ruled the desert. Whether or not you’re a history buff, the tales of Gods and kings will keep you intrigued.
2. Egyptian Food is Literal Heaven
Koshary, ful, fiteer. Don’t think you’re going to bring your diet to Egypt: the cuisine here is hearty, flavorful, and delicious. You won’t be able to resist a midnight shawarma run or rubbing elbows with locals at one of the ful (fava beans) breakfast carts.
And let’s not forget the most quintessential Egyptian food of all: koshary.
Made of pasta, rice, lentils, garbanzo beans and onions, this food-coma inducing dish is beloved by all – so much so that there are entire shops dedicated to just serving koshary. The drool-worthy blend of spices combined with the low cost of this dish makes it one you’re guaranteed to indulge in again and again.
3. You’ll feel welcomed
Egyptians know that Egypt can be overwhelming to the senses, especially for first-time visitors. Because of this, they go out of their way to welcome tourists to Egypt…literally. The number of times people shouting “welcome to Egypt!” or trying to guess where we were from was astounding.
Be prepared to get asked to take selfies with locals, especially at tourist sites. The excitement of encountering tourists again is palpable.
4. It’s a Year-round Destination
What’s the winter weather like in Egypt? Surprisingly, not cold at all. Our tour started in Cairo and included time both in Luxor and Aswan. Cairo was the “coldest” but a jacket was all I needed to get through the day. By the time we made it to Luxor and Aswan, I was rocking my t-shirt and reaching for my sunscreen. Suffice to say, Egypt is a year-round destination…just be prepared for scorching summers.
Note: Be sure to dress modestly no matter what the weather to be respectful of local culture and religion.
5. The Landscapes are Diverse
Beaches, mountains, valleys and deserts: Egypt has it all. Go from the bustling city of Cairo to the inspiring museum that is Luxor. Snorkel your way through the Red Sea and camp overnight in the beautiful White Desert. It’s a country that has something and someplace for everyone, from the history buffs, to the foodies to the nature lovers.
6. You’ll Get Plenty of Amazing Pictures
Let’s be real…if you’re planning on visiting Egypt, you definitely want an iconic photo in front of the Pyramids. And with a camel. And kissing the Sphinx. And at the temples. Basically, Egypt is serious Instagram goals. #DoItForTheGram
7. Your Bank Account Will Thank You
Egypt has transformed into a budget-friendly destination over the years, with a current exchange rate of $1 USD to 18 Egyptian pounds. To put that into context, that will easily get you a large order of koshary or a shawarma wrap. Not too shabby, huh?
8. You Can Go Treasure Hunting (Sort of)
The major cites of Egypt are home to bazaars and markets galore, filled with trinkets and souvenirs of all shapes and sizes. Haggling is a national pastime in Egypt, so brush up on your negotiation skills and channel your inner Indiana Jones: it’s time to go treasure hunting!
9. You’ll Shatter (Your Own) Misconceptions
Safety, safety, safety. It’s on everyone’s mind every time Egypt usually gets mentioned, and with media coverage in the past decade, we understand the concern. But in all honesty, the chances are you will never feel unsafe in Egypt. There are plenty of security at all the tourist sites and at the train stations. Booking a small group tour is recommend, having a local guide will be an invaluable added perk!
So what are you waiting for? Book that ticket and get yourself to Egypt. The time to fulfill your childhood dreams is now!
